The Monastery of Dourachani, also known as the Holy Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos, is a significant religious and historical landmark located near Ioannina, Greece. Situated on the eastern banks of Lake Pamvotida and at the foot of Mount Mitsikeli, it stands directly opposite the city's castle, offering a striking view across the water. The monastery's origins are traced back to 1434 when, according to local lore, Durahan Pasha, a Turkish Beylerbey of Rumelia, was leading his army to Argyrokastro. During the winter, his troops crossed the frozen Lake Pamvotida, unaware of the danger. Upon realizing they had been miraculously saved, Durahan Pasha, who was of Christian descent, erected a monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary on the site where he had encountered a pre-existing iconostasis. Though it was destroyed by fire in 1825, the monastery was rebuilt in 1830 as a three-aisled basilica with a narthex and a pillared porch. The frescoes and the iconostasis are notable examples of 19th-century religious art. For many years, the monastery served as a focal point for the surrounding area and, in recent decades, has become known for its philanthropic work, particularly under the guidance of the late Father Athanasios, who established a boarding school and provided care for children in need. Today, the monastery continues to operate as a convent, offering spiritual guidance and maintaining its historical and cultural significance. Visitors can explore the monastery's grounds, admire its architecture, and experience the peaceful atmosphere that has drawn pilgrims and tourists for centuries. The monastery is dedicated to the Birth of the Virgin (September 8).
