The Museum of the Royal Tombs at Aigai (Aegae), modern-day Vergina, stands as a testament to the power and artistry of the ancient Kingdom of Macedon. Situated 75 km west of Thessaloniki, the museum is centered around the royal tombs, most notably that of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. The underground museum, constructed in 1993 and inaugurated in 1997, houses a remarkable collection of artifacts recovered from archaeological excavations. These treasures provide insights into the burial customs, artistic achievements, and daily life of the Macedonian elite. Exhibits are presented in four interconnected areas: the Palace, the royal burial cluster of the Temenid dynasty, the burial cluster of Philip II, and a gateway entrance with sculptures from city sanctuaries and the restored upper floor of the Palace. Among the most spectacular finds are the golden larnax containing Philip II's cremated remains, adorned with the Vergina Sun, and his intricately crafted armor and shield. Visitors can also admire the golden oak wreath he wore during his funeral pyre, as well as an array of jewelry, weapons, and other grave goods. The museum also displays the tomb of Alexander IV, son of Alexander the Great. The site of Aigai, including the tombs and other archaeological remains, earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1996, recognizing its exceptional architecture and its significance in understanding the transition from city-states to empires in European civilization.
