Catholic Cathedral of the Presentation of the Lord: A Venetian Legacy in Naxos

The Catholic Cathedral of the Presentation of the Lord is located within the Kastro (castle) area of Naxos Town, a lasting symbol of the island's Venetian heritage. Constructed in the 13th century, following the establishment of the Duchy of the Archipelago by Marco Sanudo, the cathedral has undergone several transformations, most notably in the 17th century, reflecting the influence of prominent Catholic families on Naxos. Inside, the marble floors bear the coats of arms of noble Venetian families, marking their gravestones and narrating tales of a bygone era. The Baroque wooden altarpiece, crafted in 1744 by artisans from Chios, features the revered icon of the Merciful Madonna, a double-sided 11th or 12th-century Byzantine masterpiece. Legend says it washed ashore after falling into the sea near Nicomedia. Today, the Catholic Cathedral remains an active place of worship and a historical site open to the public.
