Discover more about Theodoros Kolokotronis Statue

The Theodoros Kolokotronis Statue is a prominent landmark in Nafplio, Greece, commemorating the life and contributions of Theodoros Kolokotronis, a key leader in the Greek War of Independence. Born in Messenia in 1770, Kolokotronis, also known as the 'Old Man of Moria,' played a crucial role in major military operations, including the siege of Tripolitsa and the defeat of Dramalis at Dervenakia. The statue, the work of sculptor Lazaros Sochos, was erected in 1901 after a pan-Greece fundraising campaign. It is located in Kolokotronis Park, near the old railway station. The statue portrays Kolokotronis on horseback, armed and in traditional clothing, looking stern and upright as if heading to battle. His outstretched right hand points towards Dervenakia, a reminder of his victory during the struggle for independence. The horse's stance, with one front leg in the air, symbolizes that the rider died from injuries sustained in battle, although Kolokotronis actually died of a stroke. A similar statue by Sochos can be found in Athens. Kolokotronis lived in Nafplio for many years and was given a house in Syntagma Square. The statue serves as a reminder of Greece's fight for freedom and independence, and a tribute to a national hero.
