Discover more about Skaros Rock

Skaros Rock, an imposing rock formation jutting out from the coast of Imerovigli, Santorini, is a testament to the island's volcanic origins and rich history. Formed by volcanic eruptions around 68,000 B.C. and shaped by centuries of erosion and earthquakes, this prominent landmark served as a strategic defensive site. In the 13th century, the Byzantine Empire fortified Skaros, recognizing its elevated position and panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. The Venetians, under Giacomo Barozzi, further developed the fortress, known as "La Roka," which became the island's capital and a vital stronghold against pirates. The settlement thrived, boasting over 200 homes, businesses, churches, and even a small harbor. Legend claims that Skaros was never conquered. However, Skaros's prosperity was short-lived. Volcanic activity and earthquakes, particularly between the 17th and 19th centuries, caused significant damage, leading residents to abandon the fortress for the more accessible villages of Fira and Imerovigli. Today, only ruins remain, offering a glimpse into the island's past. The hike to Skaros Rock is a rewarding experience, offering breathtaking views of the caldera, the Aegean Sea, and the surrounding islands. The trail from Imerovigli leads down a winding staircase, past the Agios Georgios Church, to the base of the rock. Visitors can explore the ruins, visit the Theoskepasti Chapel, and even attempt the challenging climb to the summit for unparalleled views.
