Discover more about Orthodox Church of Holy Prophet Elias

The Orthodox Church of Holy Prophet Elias, located in the area of Froudia, just a couple of kilometers outside Chania, is a testament to faith and resilience. Originally built during the Venetian period as a smaller shrine to Prophet Elisha, a larger church dedicated to Prophet Elias was added in the mid-16th century. The church holds historical significance as the site of the Cretan Revolutionary Camp in 1897. It was destroyed during a bombardment by the Great Powers in 1897 and later restored, with the Tsar of Russia financing the reconstruction, believing the destruction was punishment from Prophet Elias himself. The church was renovated at later times, thereby altering its original form. Today, the church is known for its beautiful architecture, tranquil atmosphere, and panoramic views of Chania and the Mediterranean Sea. Visitors can explore the church's interior, adorned with frescoes and religious iconography, and wander through the surrounding gardens. The tombs of Eleftherios Venizelos, a significant Greek statesman, and his son Sophocles, are located near the church, adding to the site's historical importance. A monument also commemorates the heroism of Spyros Kayaledakis, who risked his life to raise the Greek flag during the 1897 revolution. Visiting the Orthodox Church of Holy Prophet Elias offers a memorable experience, blending history, spirituality, and natural beauty.
