Discover more about Acropolis of Rhodes

The Acropolis of Rhodes, unlike many ancient citadels, was not a fortified structure but rather a monumental zone with sanctuaries, grand temples, and public buildings. Dating back to the Hellenistic period (3rd-2nd century BC), this acropolis offers a unique blend of natural beauty and architectural ingenuity. Located on Monte Smith, about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) west of the city center, it provides panoramic views of the city and the coastline. Key monuments within the Acropolis include the Temple of Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus, the Temple of Pythian Apollo, a stadium, an odeon, and a gymnasium. The Temple of Pythian Apollo, partially restored, stands out with its re-erected columns visible from the harbor. The stadium, dating back to the 3rd century BC, once hosted the Haleion Games. The Odeion, a small marble structure, likely served as a venue for musical events and rhetoric lessons. Excavations, initiated by the Italian Archaeological School between 1912 and 1945 and continued by the Greek Archaeological Service from 1946, have unveiled significant insights into the site's history. Today, ongoing excavations within the protected archaeological park continue to reveal more of the ancient city. While only a fragment of the original grandeur is currently visible, the Acropolis of Rhodes remains a testament to Hellenistic architecture and a must-see destination for history enthusiasts.
