Discover more about Castle of Monolithos

The Castle of Monolithos, located near the village of Monolithos, stands as a testament to Rhodes' strategic importance throughout history. The castle was constructed in the 15th century by the Knights of St. John, who rebuilt it from a former Byzantine castle and ancient watchtower. Grand Master D'Aubusson oversaw the reconstruction around 1476, and his shield is carved above the gate. The location was one of the four strongest fortresses on the island during the Knights' rule. Strategically positioned 236 meters above sea level, the castle provided a clear vantage point over the southern part of Rhodes, enabling residents to spot approaching pirates and prepare for potential attacks. In 1479, a decree ordered the residents of Apolakkia village to seek refuge within the castle walls in case of an attack. The castle's natural fortification made it a formidable defense. After the Knights departed in 1522, the castle fell into the hands of the Turks. As piracy diminished in the 17th century, the castle was abandoned. Today, only parts of the outer walls remain, along with a restored chapel dedicated to Agios Panteleimon and the remains of another chapel dedicated to St. George. The climb to the castle involves navigating a path and a series of steps carved into the rock. The panoramic views from the summit include the Aegean Sea, the island of Halki, and the surrounding landscape. Many visitors leave small piles of rocks as a memento.
