    Discover more about Akrotiri

Akrotiri is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Aegean, located on the southern side of Santorini. This Bronze Age settlement thrived as a Minoan port town, with evidence of habitation dating back to the 5th millennium BCE. The town's strategic location facilitated trade with other Aegean cultures, leading to prosperity and sophistication.Around 1650-1600 B.C., a massive volcanic eruption buried Akrotiri in ash, preserving it for millennia. Unlike Pompeii, there's no evidence of human remains found, suggesting an orderly evacuation before the eruption. Excavations, which began in the 1870s and more extensively in 1967, have unearthed a well-planned town with paved streets, multi-story buildings, and an advanced drainage system.Akrotiri's buildings were adorned with vibrant frescoes depicting scenes of daily life, religious rituals, and the natural world. These frescoes, along with pottery, furniture, and other artifacts, offer a fascinating glimpse into Minoan society. Today, visitors can explore the site via suspended walkways, protected by a bioclimatic roof that ensures comfortable temperatures and preservation of the ruins. The Akrotiri excavation site is associated with the Minoan civilization due to inscriptions in Linear A, and close similarities in artifact and fresco styles.
