Discover more about Filerimos

Filerimos Hill, rising 267 meters above the Mediterranean Sea, is located approximately 15 kilometers from Rhodes Town, near the village of Trianta. This location is steeped in history, with layers spanning from ancient Greek civilization to the Knights of St. John and Italian occupation. The hill was once the site of the Acropolis of Ialyssos, one of the three ancient city-states of Rhodes. Ruins of a temple dedicated to Athena Polias can still be seen near the Church of Our Lady of Filerimos. During the early Christian era, the temple was converted into a three-aisled basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In the 14th century, the Knights of St. John built a monastery, which was later rebuilt by the Italians during their occupation from 1912 to 1945. The Church of Our Lady of Filerimos housed the icon of the Virgin Mary of Filerimos, believed to have been painted by St. Luke. The icon was brought to Rhodes in the 13th century and remained there until the island fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1523. The Knights took the icon with them, and after centuries of wandering, it is now housed in the Blue Chapel of the National Museum of Montenegro. Visitors can walk the Road to Calvary (Via Dolorosa), a pathway built during the Italian occupation, which features shrines depicting the Passion of Christ. The path leads to a large concrete cross at the western edge of the hill, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the airport, Kremasti village, and the Turkish coast. Today, Filerimos Hill is also known for the peacocks that roam freely around the site, adding to its charm.
