Discover more about Ancient Temple of Messon

The Ancient Temple of Messon, also known as the Sanctuary of Messon, is located near the center of Lesvos, Greece, approximately 9km southeast of Agia Paraskevi. The term 'Messon' refers to its location in the middle of the island. This Pan-Lesbian sanctuary was a significant place of worship and common festivities for the people of Lesbos. Established around the 7th century BC, the temple was dedicated to a triad of deities: Zeus, Hera, and Dionysos. The temple served as the seat of the Lesbian Koinon (Commonwealth) until the 2nd century AD. The existing temple ruins date back to the late Classical period (330-300 BC). The temple was constructed in the Ionic style, featuring eight columns on the short sides and fourteen on the long sides. The design is an early example of a pseudodipteral ground plan in ancient Greek architecture. Over the centuries, the temple faced destruction, possibly by an earthquake around the 3rd-4th century AD. During the early Christian era, a basilica was built over the temple ruins, and marble from the original structure was used as mortar. Later, a small chapel dedicated to Taxiarchis (the Archangel Michael) was erected on the site. Today, visitors can explore the archaeological site, which is open to the public (except Mondays).
