Discover more about Holy Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

The Holy Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, located on Fragkon Street in Thessaloniki, serves as the seat of the Apostolic Vicariate of Thessaloniki. The cathedral was constructed in 1899, replacing an older church that dated back to 1743. Designed by Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli, the cathedral exhibits a Renaissance-influenced style with European architectural elements. The cathedral features a three-aisled basilica structure, adorned with Corinthian-style columns and stained glass windows. The interior also houses a statue of Paul the Apostle. The crypt, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was completed in 1897. The construction of the cathedral was aided by Frederick Charnaud, a French tobacco merchant. Despite surviving the Great Fire of Thessaloniki in 1917, the cathedral suffered significant damage during World War II. Post-war repairs restored the roof, furnishings, and organ. Subsequent renovations included relocating the altar in the early 1970s, refurbishing the crypt in 1981, repainting the church in 2000, and installing modern lighting, heating, and air-conditioning systems in 2008. The cathedral holds regular Mass services in both Greek and English. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8 is a significant Marian celebration.
