Discover more about Acropolis of Thessaloniki

The Acropolis of Thessaloniki, situated on the northeastern and highest point of the city, stands as a testament to Thessaloniki's layered past. Founded in 315 BC by King Cassander of Macedon, the city's acropolis has been a strategic vantage point and defensive stronghold for centuries. The Acropolis, meaning "upper city", is located just beyond the Vlatadon Monastery and inside the northern wall of the city. Over the centuries, the Acropolis has seen the influence of Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans, each adding to its architectural tapestry. Massive gates, known as 'Portares', guard its entrance. Within its walls lies the Eptapyrgio, also called Yedi Kule, a Byzantine-Ottoman fortress with a complex history. Initially built in the Venetian period (1423-1430) to resist the Turkish threat, it consists of a surrounding wall and seven towers. Ironically, the middle and largest tower was built by Tsaous Bey, the first Turkish governor of the city. Despite its name meaning "seven towers," it actually has ten. From the late 18th century until 1988, the Eptapyrgio served as a prison, a grim chapter in its history. Thousands of political and criminal prisoners were held in inhumane conditions, and the surrounding area was used as an execution site, especially during the civil war period. Today, it is a cultural center where restoration and archaeological work began in the 1970s and continue to this day. The Tower of Trigonio, or Chain Tower, also dominates the Acropolis, offering magnificent views. Visitors can explore the well-preserved walls, enjoy panoramic views of Thessaloniki and the Thermaic Gulf, and delve into the city's Byzantine and Ottoman history. The Acropolis provides a unique glimpse into the past and a tranquil escape from the bustling city below.
