The Thracian Tomb of Mikri Doxipara, located near the villages of Mikri Doxipara, Zoni, and Chelidona in the Evros region of Greece, offers a captivating glimpse into the world of the Thracians. This open-air museum centers around a large tumulus, a man-made mound, constructed in the early 2nd century AD to honor four members of a wealthy, landowning family. Excavations at the site have revealed four large pits containing the cremated remains of three men and one woman, accompanied by a wealth of grave goods intended to accompany them into the afterlife. These offerings include clay, glass, and bronze vessels, lamp stands and lamps, weapons, jewelry, and wooden boxes. The tumulus, approximately 60 meters in diameter and 7.5 meters high, was strategically built on a natural hill to be visible from afar. Perhaps the most remarkable discovery at Mikri Doxipara is the presence of five wagons, buried along with their horses. These wagons were used to transport the deceased to the site and were interred as a symbol of the family's wealth and status. The excellent preservation of the wagons and horse skeletons, including wooden impressions from two of the wagons, provides a unique and vivid picture of Thracian burial customs. Visiting the Thracian Tomb of Mikri Doxipara offers a chance to connect with the history of Thrace and appreciate the artistry and engineering of the Thracian people.
