Kovan Kaya, translating to "The Rock-Beehive," is part of a megalithic Thracian cult complex in the Eastern Rhodopes, near the village of Dolno Cherkovishte. This natural landmark features a volcanic rock massif with more than 100 trapezoidal niches carved into its sheer cliffs. The purpose of these niches remains a mystery, with theories suggesting they were used for ritual purposes or to hold urns containing the ashes of cremated remains. Archaeologists from the Regional Historical Museum in Haskovo believe the complex is connected to Thracian settlements, castles, and shrines in the surrounding areas. The southeast orientation of the niches suggests a ritual significance to the ancient Thracians. Legend says that this mystical place with trapezoidal niches “opened” a door to space, through which on specific days of the year, the human soul made its connection with the universe. Beyond its historical significance, Kovan Kaya offers stunning views of the Arda River's meanders. The surrounding area is rich in biodiversity, making it a destination for nature lovers. Northwest of Kovan Kaya is Aul Kaya, another rock sanctuary used by the ancient Thracians.
