Discover more about Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park

The Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park in Hagåtña is a significant historical site dedicated to preserving Guam's Chamorro heritage. The park's centerpiece is a set of eight latte stones, which are ancient megaliths consisting of a pillar (haligi) and a cap (tasa). These stones were originally located in the village of Mepo' in southern Guam and were moved to their current location in 1955. Latte stones were used as supports for buildings, possibly canoe houses, food storage, or public spaces, from around 900 CE until the arrival of the Spanish in 1521. Today, they remain a vital part of Chamorro cultural identity. In 1991, Senator Angel Santos, a Chamorro activist, founded Nasion Chamoru (Chamorro Nation) at this site, making the park a symbol of the Chamorro sovereignty movement. The park also features entrances to caves constructed during the Japanese occupation of Guam from 1941 to 1944. These caves, built by forced laborers, were used for storing supplies and as bomb shelters. The park is part of the Hagåtña Heritage Walking Trail and is a place for both locals and tourists to reflect on Guam's history and culture.
