Plaza de España, Central Guam Travel Guide

Plaza de España, located in the heart of Hagåtña, Guam, stands as a poignant reminder of the island's rich and complex history. For centuries, this plaza served as the center of government and social life, first under Spanish rule and later during the American naval administration. Originally named Plaza de Magalahes, it was renamed Plaza de España, reflecting Guam's historical ties to Spain.The Plaza's most prominent feature was the Casa Gobierno, or Governor's Palace, initially constructed in 1736. This served as the office and residence of the Spanish Governor. The palace was reconstructed in 1885, but unfortunately, most of it was destroyed during the intense shelling of Hagåtña in 1944, during World War II. Today, visitors can still see portions of the foundation.Despite the destruction, several structures have survived or been restored, offering a glimpse into the Plaza's past. These include the three-arch gate to the Almacen (Arsenal), the Azotea (back porch), and the Chocolate House, where Spanish elites once enjoyed hot chocolate. The elevated Azotea, originally an open-air terrace, offers a stunning view of the surroundings. The Plaza also features the Tool Shed, Siesta Shed, and remnants of the Spanish Walls.After the Spanish-American War in 1898, the Plaza continued to serve as the headquarters for the American administration. Under American rule, the plaza was expanded to include recreational facilities like a baseball field and badminton court. Today, the Kiosko (bandstand) stands where the baseball field once was. The Plaza de España was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.Today, Plaza de España serves as a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. It hosts numerous social and civic functions, including the inauguration of Guam's Governor, underscoring its enduring significance in Guam's history.
