Discover more about Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park

The Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park, located in the heart of Hagåtña, Guam, is a significant cultural and historical site. The park's centerpiece is a collection of eight latte stones, which are two-part pillars consisting of a base (haligi) and a cap (tasa). These stones, made of limestone, basalt, or sandstone, were used by the ancient Chamorro people to support their homes and other important structures from around 900 CE until the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. The latte stones in this park were relocated from the village of Mepo' in the Fena area. The park is named in honor of Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos, a Chamorro rights activist who founded the Nasion Chamoru (Chamorro Nation) in the park on July 21, 1991. This grassroots organization advocated for Chamorro self-determination and cultural preservation. In addition to the latte stones, the park contains entrances to caves that were constructed during the Japanese occupation of Guam from 1941-1944. These caves, built by forced laborers, were used for storage and as bomb shelters. The Agana/Hagåtña Cliffline Fortifications, including these caves, are listed on the Guam and National Register of Historic Places. Visitors to the park can explore the latte stones, learn about their historical and cultural significance, and reflect on the Chamorro people's enduring spirit. The park also provides a peaceful setting with landscaped gardens and pathways. It's a place where history comes alive, offering a unique blend of education, tranquility, and cultural appreciation.
