The Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica, located in the heart of Hagåtña, Guam, is a significant religious and historical landmark. As the first Catholic church in the Pacific, its origins trace back to February 2, 1669, when it was established under the guidance of Jesuit missionary Padre Diego Luís de San Vitores. The original structure, a modest chapel made of rough logs and nipa thatch, was built with the assistance of the Chamorro people. Chief Quipuha of Hagåtña donated the land, while Queen Maria Ana of Spain contributed financially to the mission.Over the centuries, the cathedral has undergone several transformations. A more permanent structure of coral stones was erected in 1670.
