Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica: A Symbol of Guam's Faith

The Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica, located in the heart of Hagåtña, Guam, is a significant religious and historical landmark. As the first Catholic church in the Pacific, its origins trace back to February 2, 1669, when it was established under the guidance of Jesuit missionary Padre Diego Luís de San Vitores. The original structure, a modest chapel made of rough logs and nipa thatch, was built with the assistance of the Chamorro people. Chief Quipuha of Hagåtña donated the land, while Queen Maria Ana of Spain contributed financially to the mission. Over the centuries, the cathedral has undergone several transformations. A more permanent structure of coral stones was erected in 1670. However, all structures were destroyed during the liberation of Guam in World War II, except for those dedicated to San Dionisio in Humåtak, San José in Inalåhan and San Francisco at Yoʼña. The present-day cathedral-basilica was dedicated on April 20, 1959, and celebrated its golden jubilee in 2009. The basilica's architecture blends modern and traditional Chamorro styles. Its white facade and bell tower make it a recognizable landmark in Hagåtña. Inside, stained glass windows depict biblical scenes, casting colorful reflections and enhancing the spiritual ambiance. The cathedral enshrines the revered statue of Santa Marian Kamalen, a symbol of local devotion.
