Discover more about Fonte Plateau Unit

Fonte Plateau Unit, a unit of the War in the Pacific National Historical Park, marks a significant location in the Battle of Guam. High above Asan Beach, this plateau was the site of the final battle in Phase 1, where American forces fought to secure the hills overlooking the water in July 1944. The capture of Fonte Plateau on July 29, 1944, was crucial for linking the beachheads at Asan and Hågat. Five days after Guam was declared secure, Admiral Chester Nimitz established the U.S. Pacific Fleet's forward headquarters at Fonte Plateau on August 15, 1944, directing the rest of the Pacific war from here. Today, the main point of interest is the Imperial Japanese Army's communications center, a U-shaped concrete bunker with two arched entrances. This bunker served as the communications hub for the Japanese forces on Guam before being captured on July 28, 1944. Despite heavy American bombardment, the communication equipment inside remained largely intact, allowing Lieutenant General Takeshi Takashina to maintain contact with his troops. Visitors can explore the plateau and reflect on the events that unfolded here. The communications center is occasionally open for tours; checking with the Visitor Center for scheduled tours is recommended. The plateau also offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, providing a serene setting to contemplate Guam's rich history and natural beauty.
