Discover more about Latte of Freedom

The Latte of Freedom stands as a powerful symbol of Guam's unique cultural heritage, blending the island's Chamorro roots with American ideals. Located in Hagåtña, within the Ricardo J. Bordallo Governor's Complex, this monument offers visitors a chance to reflect on Guam's past and present. The monument's design is based on the latte stone, a traditional Chamorro structure consisting of a pillar and capstone. These stones were historically used as foundations for important buildings, representing strength and resilience. The Latte of Freedom was envisioned to be the 'Statue of Liberty' for Guam, welcoming visitors from Asia to the westernmost coast of the United States. The original concept, drafted in 1976, was much grander, with plans for a 200-foot tower. However, a scaled-down version was completed in 2010, fulfilling the vision of Governor Ricardo J. Bordallo. The structure is built to withstand typhoons and earthquakes, symbolizing the enduring spirit of the Chamorro people. Visitors can ascend the Latte of Freedom to enjoy panoramic views of Guam's western shores. The site also includes the Hall of Governors, which commemorates the leaders who have shaped Guam since the 1950 Organic Act. A plaque at the Latte of Freedom is dedicated to the schoolchildren of Guam who contributed to the monument's construction.
