Asan Beach Unit: A Place of Remembrance and Recreation

Asan Beach Unit, a part of the War in the Pacific National Historical Park, is a place of profound historical significance and natural beauty. This seaside park, known locally as Assan Beach Park, was the northernmost landing beach for American troops during the Battle of Guam in July 1944. The battle to recapture Guam was hard-fought, with the American invasion forces landing on Asan Beach and Agat Beach on July 21, 1944. The full liberation of Guam took three weeks, resulting in 1,800 U.S. servicemen killed and a total of 7,400 casualties, plus another 17,500 casualties for the Japanese forces. Today, Asan Beach Unit serves as a memorial to the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Visitors can explore the remains of Imperial Japanese defenses, including pillboxes and gun emplacements, and pay their respects at the Liberator's Memorial. The park also features numerous plaques and shrines that recount the history of the battle and honor those who died. Beyond its historical significance, Asan Beach Unit is a popular spot for recreation. The park offers picnic tables, paved walkways, and open grassy areas, making it ideal for swimming, kite flying, jogging, and family gatherings. Asan Beach has a rich history, serving as a leper colony, prison camp, Navy headquarters, small military base, hospital annex, and Vietnamese refugee camp.
