Discover more about Fouha Rock | Fu'una and Puntan

Fouha Rock, a designated National Natural Landmark, stands as a powerful symbol of Chamorro creation mythology on the southwestern coast of Guam. Rising approximately 150 feet above Fouha Bay near the village of Humåtak, this dramatic rock formation, also called Creation Point, is more than just a scenic attraction; it's a deeply significant cultural site. According to Chamorro legend, the creators of the universe were the brother and sister gods, Puntan and Fu'una. Puntan instructed his sister, Fu'una, to use his body to create the world. His eyes became the sun and moon, his eyebrows became rainbows, and his back and chest became the Earth and sky. After creating the world, Fu'una threw herself into the Earth, transforming into Fouha Rock, also known as Lasso' Fu'a. From this rock, the first human beings emerged, populating the Earth. Even with the strong Catholic presence on Guam due to Spanish colonization, the legend of Fouha Rock persists through oral tradition. Many Chamorro people continue to honor Fu'una through pilgrimage, song, dance, and offerings at the sacred site. Visiting Fouha Rock offers a chance to connect with Guam's ancient past and appreciate the enduring power of Chamorro culture. The hike to the rock is relatively easy, winding through grassy hills and offering picturesque views of the bay.
