Discover more about Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park

The Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park in Hagåtña is a tribute to Guam's Chamorro heritage. Established in the 1950s, the park's centerpiece is a collection of eight latte stones, ancient pillars with capstones that once supported Chamorro buildings. These stones were moved from their original location in the village of Mepo', Fena. Latte stones are a significant symbol of Chamorro culture, dating back to around 900 CE, and were used as supports for important structures. The park provides a glimpse into the architectural ingenuity and cultural practices of the Chamorro people before Spanish colonization. The park is named in honor of Senator Angel Leon Guerrero Santos, a Chamorro rights activist. Santos was a central figure in the Chamorro sovereignty movement, and the park was a place of reflection for him. In 2004, the park was renamed to honor his memory and contributions. In addition to the latte stones, the park features entrances to caves that were constructed during the Japanese occupation of Guam from 1941 to 1944. These caves, built by forced laborers, served as storage areas and bomb shelters. The park is a stop on the Hagåtña Heritage Walking Trail, linking it to other historical sites in the capital.
