Getting There

  • Car

    From Hagåtña, take Marine Corps Drive (Route 1) south towards Agat. Continue until you reach Route 4 and turn right. Follow Route 4 until you reach Inalåhan. Look for signs for Inarajan Pool and park there. From the parking lot, follow the signs for a short hike to Gadao's Cave. Be aware that there may be a small parking fee.

    From the main bus terminal in Hagåtña, take a bus heading towards Inalåhan. Get off at the Inarajan Pool stop. From there, follow the signs for a short hike to Gadao's Cave. Bus fares are around $3 per ride. Check the local bus schedule for times.

    If you are near Inalåhan, Gadao's Cave is a 15-minute walk from the nearest bus stop on Route 4. Follow the signs for Gadao's Cave and enjoy the natural surroundings as you make your way to the entrance. The path may be uneven, so wear appropriate footwear.

Gadao's Cave, also known as Liyang Gadao, is a captivating nature preserve located near the village of Inalåhan, Guam. This historical site is renowned for its breathtaking rock formations and intriguing cultural significance. The cave is believed to be the home of Gadao, a mythical figure in Chamorro folklore, adding depth to the visitor experience.As you venture into the cave, you'll be greeted by stunning stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over centuries, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. The cave features a panel of approximately 50 Chamorro pictographs, painted with a mixture of coral lime and tree sap. The most unusual images are of two human stick figures. It is not known who painted them or when, nor what their significance is. The legendary chief of Inarajan Gadao is said to be the creator of the cave's images. The drawings range in size. The designs vary from geometric shapes to representational figures depicting human-like or animal-like forms.The entrance to the cave is about 10–12 feet wide and about 10 feet high. The following chamber is about 8 feet deep, 5 feet wide, and 7 feet high at its highest point. A small slit between the walls at the chamber's ends opens into a small cavity about 3 feet deep, 2 feet wide, and 7 feet high. The outer chamber has the majority of images, whose sizes range from about 3 inches to 1 foot.The surrounding lush greenery provides a picturesque backdrop, perfect for photography and nature walks. Trails lead through the verdant forest, allowing you to immerse yourself in Guam's diverse flora and fauna. The serenity of the area makes it an ideal spot for relaxation and reflection.
