Discover more about Fouha Rock | Fu'una and Puntan

Fouha Rock, a designated National Natural Landmark since 1972, stands as a powerful symbol of Chamorro creation mythology. Located in a secluded bay in the southern village of Umatac, this 150-foot rock formation is also known as Creation Point. According to ancient Chamorro legend, Fu'una and Puntan, brother and sister gods, sacrificed themselves to create the universe. Puntan provided his body, which Fu'una divided to form the earth, sky, sun, moon, and rainbows. In her final act, Fu'una threw herself into the earth, transforming into Fouha Rock, from which the first humans emerged. The ancient Chamorro people believed the rock held mystical healing powers due to its connection to the goddess. Visiting Fouha Rock involves an easy hike along a trail that winds through grassy hills and clusters of coconut and banana trees, leading down to a picturesque bay. The trail starts near the Guam Power Authority substation WBP-2, just north of Umatac Bay. While the hike is generally easy, be mindful of the uphill climb on the return and the sharp limestone, coral, and rocks along the bay.
