Discover more about Convento Santa Clara

Convento Santa Clara, located in the heart of Antigua Guatemala, offers a captivating glimpse into the city's colonial past. Founded in 1699 by the Franciscan order, the convent served as a religious retreat for nuns of the Order of Saint Clare, also known as the Poor Clares. The original structure took 16 years to complete, only to be heavily damaged by an earthquake shortly after its completion. It was rebuilt by 1734, but suffered extreme damage again in 1773 after another earthquake. The nuns abandoned the property and moved to Guatemala City in 1776. Today, the ruins stand as a testament to Antigua's resilience, showcasing the Baroque architectural style prevalent during the colonial era. Visitors can explore the remains of the church, the two-story convent which once housed forty-six nuns, bedroom cells, kitchen, refectory, workrooms and infirmary. The site features intricate arches, serene courtyards, and remnants of frescoes, offering a peaceful ambiance for reflection and photography. While wandering through the grounds, one can almost imagine the austere lives of the cloistered nuns, who were known for their strict devotion to prayer, penance and humble living conditions. The church was even designed with confessionals that allowed them to enter and leave without being seen. The complex was reclaimed by the state in 1944 and remains one of Antigua's most impressive structures.
