Discover more about Central Acropolis

The Central Acropolis is an architectural complex that served as both an administrative hub and the residence for Tikal's royal families from approximately 350 BC to 950 AD. Situated immediately south of the Great Plaza, the Acropolis offers a glimpse into the lives of the Mayan elite. Over time, the Central Acropolis expanded upwards through the construction of new architectural layers, rather than outwards. The palace structures are arranged around six courtyards, each on a different level. Prominent structures within the Central Acropolis include Maler's Palace (Structure 5D-65), named after archaeologist Teobert Maler, and the opulent Structure 5D-46, believed to have been a royal residence. Many chambers within the palaces still contain built-in rock beds. Today, the Central Acropolis stands as a testament to the rich history and architectural prowess of the Mayan civilization, inviting visitors to explore its intricate layout and imagine the lives of those who once dwelled within its walls.
