Discover more about Biotopo del Quetzal

Biotopo del Quetzal, also known as Biotopo Mario Dary Rivera, is a natural monument dedicated to the conservation of Guatemala's national bird, the Resplendent Quetzal. Established in 1976, the reserve spans over 1,000 hectares (2,580 acres) of protected cloud forest in the Sierra de las Minas mountain range. The reserve was founded by Mario Dary Rivera. The primary goal of the Biotopo is to protect the endangered Quetzal and its natural habitat. The Quetzal holds significant cultural importance, having been revered by the ancient Mayans as a symbol of freedom and beauty. Its vibrant green and scarlet plumage made it sacred, with its feathers used in the headdresses of kings and priests. While spotting a Quetzal requires patience and a bit of luck, the reserve offers an immersive experience in a unique high-altitude cloud forest ecosystem. The Biotopo features two well-maintained hiking trails: Sendero Los Helechos (Fern Trail), a shorter 2-kilometer loop, and Sendero Los Musgos (Moss Trail), a longer 4-kilometer loop. These trails wind through dense cloud forest, showcasing a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. Visitors can admire a variety of epiphytes (air plants), orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and mosses that thrive in the humid atmosphere. The trails also lead to waterfalls where you can take a refreshing swim. The terrain is mountainous, with altitudes ranging from 1,500 to 2,300 meters above sea level. Besides the Resplendent Quetzal, the Biotopo is home to a variety of other bird species, including hummingbirds, toucans, and parrots. Mammals like ocelots, armadillos, howler monkeys, squirrels, rabbits, foxes, and coatis also inhabit the forest, though they are harder to spot.
