Macaw Mountain Bird Park: A Sanctuary of Color

Macaw Mountain Bird Park & Nature Reserve, located just 2 kilometers north of Copán Ruinas, is more than just a tourist attraction; it's a dedicated sanctuary for rescued and endangered birds of the American tropics. The park's story began in the 1980s on Roatán Island, where Mandy Wagner started caring for abandoned parrots and macaws. By the mid-1990s, her collection had grown to 30 birds. When Wagner returned to the U.S., Lloyd Davidson, then running a fishing business in Roatan, took over the care of the birds, becoming the "Bird Man of Roatan." As more expats moved to Roatan, the number of unwanted parrots increased, and Davidson's collection grew to almost 80 birds. To provide better living conditions, he established the first bird park on rented property near Sandy Bay. This Roatan Bird Park operated for five years, serving as a testing ground for concepts later used at Macaw Mountain. In December 2001, Macaw Mountain Bird Park and Nature Reserve officially opened to the public. Today, Macaw Mountain spans 9 acres of lush forest, complete with a pristine mountain stream, freshwater springs, and slopes of shade-grown coffee. Elevated trails and decks offer spectacular views of the diverse landscape. The park operates as an educational zoological park under a permit from the Honduran Department of Forestry. It is privately funded and supported by admission fees, visitor purchases, and donations. The park's primary focus is on saving the rare and endangered Central American macaw. Many birds were previously kept as pets or seized from bird smugglers. Macaw Mountain serves as both a rescue center and a breeding center, with the ultimate goal of returning macaws to the wild and increasing their numbers. Visitors can explore the park via a circular boardwalk trail that starts and finishes at the Visitor Centre. The birds are housed in spacious aviaries, some of which visitors can enter for an up-close experience. The park is home to a wide variety of birdlife, including toucans, orioles, parrots, hawks, owls, parakeets, and motmots. Macaw Mountain also actively works to restore the population of free-flying scarlet macaws to Copán's Archaeological Park. This project, in conjunction with the World Parrot Trust, the local NGO Asociacion Copán, and several government agencies, has developed a reintroduction model that supports regional conservation and education outreach. Visiting Macaw Mountain offers a unique opportunity to interact with the intelligent, colorful birds of Central America while learning about their conservation. The park's knowledgeable staff speaks both Spanish and English, and the park itself is wheelchair accessible. The park's trails wind through the forest, crossing the river and passing numerous aviaries.
