Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the Askja Caldera visitor center. Head northeast on the road marked as F88. After approximately 10 kilometers, you will reach a fork; take the right fork towards Leirhnjukur. Continue for another 5 kilometers on the gravel road until you see signs for the Leirhnjukur lava fields. There is a parking lot available near the start of the hiking trail.
Public Transportation
To reach Leirhnjukur via public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavik to the Askja Caldera area (check local schedules for availability). After arriving at the Askja bus stop, you will need to walk approximately 10 kilometers northeast to reach Leirhnjukur. Follow the same route as if you were driving, keeping an eye out for signs directing you toward the lava fields. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes, as the terrain can be rough.
Hiking
For the adventurous, you can also hike from the Askja Caldera visitor center. There is a marked trail leading to Leirhnjukur. The hike is about 10 kilometers one way and can take approximately 3 to 4 hours depending on your pace. Make sure to carry water, snacks, and a map or GPS device, as the trail can be challenging and is best suited for those in good physical condition.
