Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the Askja Caldera visitor center. Head northeast on the road marked as F88. After approximately 10 kilometers, you will reach a fork; take the right fork towards Leirhnjukur. Continue for another 5 kilometers on the gravel road until you see signs for the Leirhnjukur lava fields. There is a parking lot available near the start of the hiking trail.

To reach Leirhnjukur via public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavik to the Askja Caldera area (check local schedules for availability). After arriving at the Askja bus stop, you will need to walk approximately 10 kilometers northeast to reach Leirhnjukur.
