Car
If you are driving, start from the town of Höfn in the Eastern Region. Head west on Route 1 (the Ring Road) for approximately 55 kilometers (about 34 miles) towards the Vatnajökull National Park area. Look for the sign for Route 998 leading to Skaftafell. Turn onto Route 998 and continue for about 10 kilometers (6 miles). Upon reaching the Skaftafell Visitor Center, you can park your car in the designated parking area. Note that parking fees may apply, typically around 750 ISK for a day. From the Visitor Center, the trail to Svartifoss starts.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a bus from Höfn to Skaftafell. Check the schedules for services provided by companies like Strætó, which may offer routes that connect with the Skaftafell area. Upon arrival at Skaftafell, you will need to walk to the Visitor Center, where the Svartifoss trail begins. Be sure to check bus times in advance, as services may be limited, especially outside the peak tourist season.
Hiking
After reaching the Skaftafell Visitor Center, you will embark on a hike to Svartifoss. The trail is well-marked and takes approximately 1 hour to 1.5 hours to reach the waterfall, depending on your pace. The hike covers about 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) one way, and the path includes some elevation gain. Make sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather, as conditions can change rapidly in Iceland.
