Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you are driving, start from the main road (Route 1) and head towards the highlands. Follow Route 26 towards Þingvellir and then take Route 36 towards Geysir. From Geysir, continue on Route 35 until you reach Route 32. Finally, take Route 32 until you see signs directing you to Stakkholtsgjá canyon. There is a parking area at the canyon entrance where you can leave your vehicle.
Public Transportation
For those relying on public transport, you can take a bus from Reykjavik to Hella (check the Sterna or Strætó schedules for the latest routes). From Hella, you will need to arrange for a taxi or a shuttle service to take you directly to Stakkholtsgjá canyon, as public transportation does not go directly to the canyon. The taxi ride will take around 30-40 minutes and will cost approximately 10,000 ISK.
Walking
Once you arrive at the parking area, the entrance to Stakkholtsgjá canyon is marked. The canyon is a short walk from the parking lot, approximately a 10-15 minute hike. The path is well-trodden, but make sure to wear sturdy footwear as the terrain can be uneven.
