Getting There
Car
From Reykjavík, drive on Route 1 (the Ring Road) until you reach the junction for Route 30. Turn onto Route 30 and continue until you reach the junction for Route 26. Take Route 26 heading towards Þingvellir National Park. Next, you will have to take Route 32 until you reach Route 26 again. Follow Route 26 until you reach the junction for Route 1 again. Continue until you reach the junction for Route 218. From here, take Route 218 until you reach the F208. This road will lead you directly to Landmannalaugar. Note that the F208 is a mountain road and requires a 4x4 vehicle due to rough conditions. Be aware there is a fee for parking in Landmannalaugar, typically around 1,000 ISK.
Public Transportation
To reach Landmannalaugar by public transport, take the bus from Reykjavík to Hella with companies like Strætó. From Hella, transfer to a bus heading to Landmannalaugar. The bus services are usually available during the summer months, so check the schedules ahead of time. The total cost for the round trip can vary but expect to pay around 8,000 ISK. Make sure to reserve your seat in advance since they can fill up quickly during the tourist season.
Hiking
If you are already in The Highlands and are looking for a more adventurous option, you can hike to Landmannalaugar. Popular starting points include Þórsmörk, which is reachable by 4x4. From Þórsmörk, follow the Laugavegur trail towards Landmannalaugar. This hike is approximately 55 kilometers and typically takes 4-5 days. Ensure you have proper gear and check weather conditions before setting out. Note that there are no fees for hiking, but you should consider the cost of food and accommodation along the trail.
