If you're traveling by car, start from Reykjavik and take Route 1 (Ring Road) heading towards Borgarnes. Continue on Route 1 for about 70 km until you reach the junction with Route 52. Turn onto Route 52 towards Húsafell. After approximately 25 km, you will see a sign for Surtshellir Cave. Turn right onto a gravel road, which leads directly to the cave. The drive takes about 2 hours from Reykjavik. Make sure your vehicle is suitable for gravel roads, and be aware of potential costs for fuel, which can vary.
Public Transportation
To reach Surtshellir via public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavik to Borgarnes. The bus leaves from the BSI bus terminal and takes about 1.5 hours. Once in Borgarnes, you will need to arrange a taxi or a local shuttle service to take you to Surtshellir, as public transport may not reach the cave directly. Be mindful of the cost of the bus ticket (approximately 3,000 ISK) and the taxi fare, which can vary widely depending on the distance and time of day.
Hiking
If you're feeling adventurous and are already in the vicinity of Húsafell, you can opt for a hiking route. Park your car at the Húsafell campsite and follow the marked trail towards Surtshellir Cave. The hike is about 10 km one way and takes approximately 3-4 hours. Ensure you have proper hiking gear and check the weather conditions before you set out, as highland weather can be unpredictable.
