Discover more about City of Chicago - City Hall

Chicago City Hall, an 11-story building located at 121 N. LaSalle Street, has been the official seat of Chicago's government since 1911. Designed by the architectural firm Holabird & Roche in the classical revival style, the building reflects Chicago's ambition after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The building occupies a full city block, bounded by Randolph, Washington, Clark, and LaSalle Streets. The east side of the building, known as the County Building, houses Cook County offices, while the west side is home to the Mayor's office, City Clerk, City Treasurer, and City Council chambers. The "fifth floor" is often used as a metonym for the power of the Mayor, whose office is located there. Throughout its history, Chicago City Hall has been a witness to significant political events, protests, and gatherings. The building's architecture features carved figures of eagles and lions, symbolizing power and protection, and a central dome that signifies civic leadership. The building was constructed between 1908 and 1911, replacing a previous City Hall and Courthouse on the same site. The current City Hall is the seventh building to serve as Chicago's city hall.
