Ferne Clyffe Lake: A Tranquil Oasis

Ferne Clyffe Lake, nestled within the 2,430-acre Ferne Clyffe State Park in Southern Illinois, presents a tranquil retreat for nature enthusiasts and anglers alike. Created in the late 1950s with the construction of an earthen dam across Buck Branch Creek, the artificial lake was filled by 1960. Today, the 16-acre lake serves as a focal point for recreation and scenic beauty within the park.The lake's relatively clear and infertile waters are surrounded by dense forests, providing a picturesque backdrop for various activities. A one-mile perimeter trail invites visitors to stroll along the shoreline, offering stunning views of the lake and its surroundings. Bank fishing is a popular pastime, with the lake stocked with rainbow trout in the spring and fall. Anglers can also find largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and redear. However, boating and swimming are prohibited to preserve the lake's tranquility and protect its ecosystem.Ferne Clyffe Lake is particularly enchanting during the fall, when the surrounding foliage transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colors. The Lakeview Picnic Shelter and Blackjack Oak Trail offer spectacular vantage points to witness this breathtaking display. The park itself boasts a rich history, with evidence suggesting that George Rogers Clark's contingent passed through the area in 1778. In 1899, two brothers recognized the area's beauty and named it Ferne Clyffe. Emma Rebman, a local schoolteacher, later opened the park to the public, and in 1949, the State of Illinois purchased the land. Today, Ferne Clyffe State Park continues to draw nature lovers with its unique geological features, diverse plant communities, and abundant recreational opportunities.
