The Vermilion River Area of Matthiessen State Park, located a few miles south of Utica, Illinois, offers a diverse landscape shaped by geological history. Named after Frederick William Matthiessen, a prominent industrialist and philanthropist, the park showcases the beauty of the Vermilion River and surrounding wooded bluffs.Matthiessen State Park's history dates back to the late 19th century when Matthiessen purchased the land, then known as Deer Park, and developed it as a private park. He employed numerous workers to construct trails, bridges, and dams, preserving the area's natural beauty. After his death, the land was donated to the state and opened as a public park in 1943.Today, the Vermilion River Area provides opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and enjoying nature. The park's unique geological formations, including exposed sandstone and mineral springs, create an educational and visually stunning experience. Visitors can explore the river bluffs, observe diverse plant and animal life, and appreciate the serene environment. The Vermilion River Area is also home to a radio-controlled model airplane field and, during the late summer, sunflower fields.

    Driving

    From Interstate 39, take the Oglesby exit and follow the signs to Matthiessen State Park. The Vermilion River Area entrance is south of the Dells Area on IL-178. Parking is free, but lots can fill quickly, especially on weekends. Overflow parking is available.
