Credit Island Park, a 450-acre island oasis in the Mississippi River, offers a blend of history and recreation. The island's name originates from its early days as a fur trading post, where Native American tribes and traders would exchange goods on credit. In September 1814, the island was the site of the Battle of Credit Island during the War of 1812. American forces, led by Major Zachary Taylor, were attacked by Sauk warriors and British artillerymen, resulting in an American defeat. This battle marked the last attempt by the U.S. to control the Upper Mississippi River during the war.In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Credit Island transformed into a recreational destination. It featured an amusement park with attractions like a bathing beach, a dance pavilion, a roller coaster, and picnic grounds. The City of Davenport purchased the island in 1918 and converted it into a public park.Today, visitors can enjoy a variety of amenities, including basketball and tennis courts, a boat ramp, an 18-hole disc golf course, nature trails, playgrounds, and picnic shelters. The Credit Island Lodge is available for rent for gatherings. The park also connects to the Great River Trail, offering opportunities for biking and hiking.
