The house is an example of American Federalist architecture with Italianate elements. Constructed with local materials like walnut timber, brick, and limestone, with some materials sourced from Chicago and even ornamental ironwork from France, the house reflects the ambition and resources of its original owner. Locals once called it the "Mansion on the Hill" because it stood out among the early structures of Peoria.Inside, visitors can explore collections of antique glass, china, furniture, toys, quilts, tools, and vintage clothing. The home is decorated with 18th and 19th-century furnishings, offering a glimpse into the life of a well-to-do family on the Illinois frontier. The Peoria Historical Society also maintains exhibits about the city's history, including the once-prominent distillery industry.
