Discover more about Quarters One

Quarters One stands as a testament to the rich history of Rock Island Arsenal. Constructed between 1870 and 1872, this grand Italianate villa was designed to be the residence of the Arsenal's commanding officer and a space for official gatherings. General Thomas J. Rodman, known as the 'Father of Rock Island Arsenal,' personally designed the building, though he passed away before its completion. With over 50 rooms and approximately 20,000 square feet, Quarters One is the second-largest single-family government residence in the United States, second only to the White House. The mansion features a hand-carved limestone exterior, ornate cast-iron accents, and a four-story observation tower. Inside, visitors can admire inlaid oak and walnut flooring, plaster cornice moldings, ceiling medallions, and Italian marble fireplaces. For over 130 years, Quarters One served as the home of 38 senior officers assigned to Rock Island Arsenal. It has hosted distinguished visitors such as Charles Lindbergh, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and General John 'Blackjack' Pershing. Although it is no longer a residence, Quarters One continues to host community functions, including weddings, receptions, meetings, and parties.
