Constructed in 1927, it was originally designed as a premier luxury hotel, boasting 120 rooms across its three floors. Over the decades, it underwent several remodeling efforts and operated under different names.In its later years, the Lafayette Hotel served as lodging for individuals in need, working with social service agencies to provide temporary housing. However, the building had been vacant since August 2024, as it was in need of significant repairs.Currently, the Lafayette Hotel is undergoing an $11.3 million renovation project to transform it into an affordable apartment complex with 54 residential units. This project aims to provide much-needed affordable housing options in the city, with social services available for residents. The renovation includes converting the former Mandalay Bay Lounge into a community room and adding a fitness center and laundry room.
