The Rockmen Guardians, also known as the Four Rock Guardians, are a striking public art installation located south of the Sinnissippi greenhouse along the Rock River Recreation Bike Path. These sculptures, created by Milwaukee artist Terese Agnew, depict four larger-than-life male warriors in armor, standing approximately 12 feet tall. Constructed from granite rocks and cement, the Rockmen have become a beloved local landmark since their installation in the autumn of 1987 and spring of 1988.The sculptures are inspired by a local tale about explorers encountering a rocky impasse on the Rock River, leading to the discovery of Rockford. Agnew envisioned the Rockmen as protectors of the land, drawing inspiration from historical and popular culture depictions of guardians, from knights in armor to modern-day superheroes. The use of red granite, a common stone in the region due to glacial activity, further connects the artwork to the local landscape.Located in Sinnissippi Park, the Rockmen Guardians offer a unique and thought-provoking experience for visitors. The sculptures are easily accessible via the Rock River Recreation Bike Path, inviting exploration and appreciation of art in a natural setting.
