Discover more about Rockford Armory

The Rockford Armory, constructed between 1936 and 1937, stands as a significant example of Art Deco architecture in Rockford, Illinois. Designed by Bradley & Bradley, the building is notable for its unique stonework and its innovative ridged frame construction, which was the first attempt to use this type of construction. This design earned the firm national recognition and served as a precursor to modern pre-engineered steel buildings. For nearly 60 years, the armory served as the headquarters for various Illinois National Guard units. During World War II and the Cold War, it was a central hub for military activities and community events, with over one million visitors by 1941. In addition to its military function, the armory became a renowned music venue in the 1970s, hosting legendary bands such as ZZ Top, KISS, REO Speedwagon, and Fleetwood Mac. After the National Guard moved to a new facility in 1993, the armory transitioned through various uses, including an educational facility. However, the building fell into disrepair, leading the City of Rockford to acquire the property in 2006. In 2024, the Rockford Area Arts Council acquired the building with plans to redevelop it into a cultural civic center with artist lofts, gallery space, offices for cultural groups, and rental space for events. The Arts Council is currently working to secure funding and address environmental hazards like asbestos before redevelopment can begin, with the goal of opening the revitalized space by 2029.
