Getting There

  • Cable Car

    The most common way to reach Auli from Joshimath is via the Auli Ropeway (Gondola), which offers a scenic 25-minute ride covering approximately 4 km. The ropeway operates from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but timings may vary depending on the season and weather. Purchase tickets directly at the Joshimath Ropeway Station. A round trip ticket costs ₹1000 per person. Alternatively, a chair lift is available from the GMNV Resort to the ski area, costing ₹500 for a round trip. Note: Online booking for the ropeway is currently unavailable.

  • Road

    If the ropeway is not operational or preferred, taxis and buses are available from Joshimath to Auli, covering a distance of 14 km. A jeep or Sumo from Joshimath to Auli costs approximately ₹800. Be aware that during winter (December to mid-March), the road from Joshimath to Auli may be closed due to heavy snowfall, making the cable car the only mode of transport.

Auli, a Himalayan jewel in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India, is renowned as one of the country's top skiing destinations. Perched at an elevation of approximately 2,800 meters (9,200 feet), Auli offers breathtaking views of majestic peaks such as Nanda Devi, Mana Parvat, and Trishul. Historically, Auli served as a trade route for the Bhotiyas, a local tribe, for commerce with Tibet. It also functioned as pastureland for nomadic herders. Over time, its pristine slopes and heavy snowfall led to its prominence as a skiing destination. In the 8th century AD, Guru Adi Shankaracharya is said to have visited Auli, and a temple built by him still exists in nearby Joshimath. Before becoming a ski resort, Auli's slopes were a training ground for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force. Today, Auli boasts well-defined trails and high altitudes, making it ideal for trekking. Popular treks include Joshimath to Kwani Bugyal and Auli to Gorson Bugyal. The Auli ropeway, connecting Joshimath and Auli, is the second-highest in Asia and offers stunning views. The town also features the Auli Artificial Lake, one of the world's highest artificial lakes, providing a serene spot for relaxation. Skiing in Auli is a major draw, with various courses available for beginners and experienced skiers. The ski season typically runs from December to March, with the best conditions in January and February.
