Discover more about C.S.I St. Andrew's Church

C.S.I. St. Andrew's Church, originally known as St. Andrew's Kirk, stands as a testament to Bengaluru's colonial heritage and the enduring legacy of the Scottish community. Consecrated in 1866, this Presbyterian church was initially a Church of Scotland establishment until it joined the Church of South India (CSI) in 1959. The foundation stone was laid in 1864 by Lady Grant, wife of Sir Hope Grant, reflecting the significant Scottish military and civilian presence in the city at the time. The church's architecture, designed by R.C. Dobbs and Major Sankey, embodies a distinct Scottish Gothic style. Constructed with brick, plaster, and chunam (lime), the building features a soaring 90-foot belfry topped with a four-dial chime clock. Stained glass windows, crafted by Scottish artists, depict Old Testament figures and Christ's apostles. The church interior also houses an intricately carved teak pulpit and a pipe organ installed in 1881. Over the years, St. Andrew's Church has evolved into a diverse and inclusive community. Bilingual services in English and Kannada were introduced in the 1960s to attract a wider congregation. The church actively engages in community outreach through its Socio-Economic Development Society, providing education and healthcare to local slum communities. St. Andrew's Church also provided its church for the St. Mark's congregation to worship, till St. Mark's was repaired and reopened in 1927. Today, St. Andrew's Church stands as a cultural landmark, hosting worship services, music concerts, and youth fellowship events. Its commitment to reconciliation, transformation, and service continues to make it a vital part of Bengaluru's spiritual and social fabric.
