Discover more about Dhauli Shanti Stupa

Dhauli Shanti Stupa, also known as the Peace Pagoda, stands as a beacon of tranquility on Dhauli Hill, overlooking the Daya River, about 8 km south of Bhubaneswar. This area is historically significant as the site of the Kalinga War in 261 BCE, a brutal conflict that led Emperor Ashoka to embrace Buddhism. Witnessing the war's bloodshed, Ashoka renounced violence and dedicated his life to peace and dharma. The Shanti Stupa was built in 1972 by the Japan Buddha Sangha and the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangha. The dazzling white, dome-shaped structure is adorned with stone panels illustrating the life of Buddha, Ashoka's conversion, and Buddhist symbols. Sculptures of Buddha in various postures and a carved elephant, representing the one in Queen Maya's dream, enhance the site's spiritual aura. Visitors can explore Ashokan Rock Edicts, ancient inscriptions with Ashoka's instructions promoting the welfare of his subjects and principles of Dharma. The site provides a serene environment for reflection and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. A light and sound show every evening (except Mondays) narrates the Kalinga War and Ashoka's transformation. Nearby attractions include the Dhabaleswar Temple, Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, and the Odisha State Museum.
