Shree Parsurameswara Temple, located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, stands as a remarkable example of the region's rich architectural and spiritual heritage. Built around 650 CE during the Shailodbhava dynasty, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered one of the oldest surviving temples in Bhubaneswar. The temple marks a significant point in the evolution of Hindu temple architecture in Odisha. The temple is designed in the Nagara style, featuring a curvilinear spire (bada) and a square-shaped sanctum (Garbhagriha). The Jagamohana, an assembly hall, is a unique addition, making it the first temple in Bhubaneswar to have this structure. The exterior walls are adorned with intricate carvings of Shiva, Parvati, and other Hindu deities, along with scenes from mythology, floral designs, and celestial beings. Unusually, the temple also features carvings of Goddess Parvati, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Ganesha, blending Shaivism and Vaishnavism. The temple also contains sculpted images of Shakta deities. Inside the temple, a Shiva Lingam is enshrined and worshipped. A statue of Nandi, the bull, sits in front of the sanctum, symbolizing devotion to Lord Shiva. The temple complex also houses a unique Lingam with 1000 engraved lingas in its north-west corner. Parashuramashtami is the major festival celebrated at the temple in June-July. The temple is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
