Shree Baitala Temple, situated in the historic Old Town of Bhubaneswar, is an ancient gem dating back to the 8th century. Dedicated to Goddess Chamunda, a fierce form of Durga, the temple is a significant example of Kalinga architecture with unique features that set it apart from other temples in the region. It is also known as Tini-mundia Deula due to the three spires on top, representing the three powers of the goddess Chamunda - Mahasaraswati, Mahalakshmi and Mahakali. The temple's architecture is a blend of Kalinga and Dravidian styles. The semi-cylindrical shape of its roof is a leading example of the Khakhara order of temples. The exterior walls are adorned with panels of Hindu deities, hunting processions, and erotic couples. The entrance faces southeast, deviating from the traditional eastward orientation. Inside the temple, the eight-armed Chamunda, holding weapons and adorned with a garland of skulls, sits on a corpse flanked by a jackal and an owl. The sanctum also features strange and frightening carvings, reflecting the temple's tantric associations. The temple is open to people of all faiths and offers a serene atmosphere for reflection and contemplation. Visiting before 10 AM is recommended for a fulfilling darshan.
