Discover more about Bandhavgarh Fort

Bandhavgarh Fort, located in the heart of Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh, India, is a historical site with a rich past. Rising 811 meters above sea level, the fort sits atop Bandhavgarh hill, surrounded by smaller hills and valleys. Legend says Lord Rama gifted the fort to his brother Lakshmana to watch over Lanka, hence the name 'Bandhavgarh,' meaning 'Brother's Fort'. The fort's history spans over 2,000 years, with ties to dynasties like the Mauryas, Vakatakas, and Kalachuris. It served as a major power center, witnessing the rule of various empires, including the Baghel dynasty, until they shifted their capital to Rewa in 1617. The fort was gradually deserted, with the last inhabitants leaving in 1935. Today, Bandhavgarh Fort stands in ruins, showcasing remnants of temples, sculptures, and ancient artifacts. The fort provides panoramic views of Bandhavgarh National Park. Within the fort complex lies the Bandhavdheesh Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, offering a spiritual experience. A key attraction is the 35-foot reclining statue of Lord Vishnu known as Shesh Shaiya. Though largely deserted, the fort remains a spiritual site, believed to have hosted the 16th-century saint Kabir Das. While the fort is currently closed to tourists, there is a possibility to visit during the Kabir Mela, an annual event held in December. Otherwise, access may be restricted to preserve the site and ensure visitor safety. Check with local guides or park officials for the most up-to-date information.
